Big Sandy Community and Technical College and Prestonsburg City Utilities Commission sign new Apprenticeship Program
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. – Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) and Prestonsburg City Utilities Commission met on Tuesday February 13, 2018 to sign documents to create a new apprenticeship program.
The three year Registered Apprenticeship Program is the first of its kind in the state and will help create occupations for Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Treatment Operators.
“Nothing breeds success like success” said Dr. Sherry Zylka, President and CEO of BSCTC. “We are excited for this opportunity with the Prestonsburg City Utilities Commission to establish the Registered Apprenticeship Program to offer a liveable wage to residents in our community.”
The Apprentices will receive 2,000 on-the-job and 144 classroom hours per year and will earn a nationally recognized industry credential upon completion.
Since 1956, Prestonsburg City Utilities Commission has improved and maintained waterworks, sewer system and natural gas distribution operations for the city. The Commission is a provider to 9,000 retail water customers, nearly 3,000 retail wastewater customers and approximately 1,100 gas customers.
