Pikeville Discount Drug celebrates one year under new owners

Owners Colby Newsome, PharmD, and Donovan Bentley, PharmD, and the staff of Pikeville Discount Drug partnered with the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce recently to celebrate one year of service and to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Newsome and Bentley are Pike County natives who are glad to return to the mountains to serve the people of the area.

“When we first took (Pikeville Discount Drug) over, we had people stopping by just to talk to us and to congratulate us who didn’t already come here to get their medicine, or who maybe still live outside the means of being able to come here to get their medicine,” said Bentley.

Newsome is a graduate of Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia, and Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy in Johnson City, Tennessee. Bentley is a graduate of Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, and Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, Virginia.

Jan. 4, 2019, marked one year of business for the duo after taking over Pikeville Discount Drug, which has served the people of Pike County for more than 60 years.

In addition to filling prescriptions and helping the community meet their medicinal needs, the pair said they plan to move toward expanding health and wellness options to the community in the form of classes targeting certain medical conditions, including diabetes. They also plan to offer testing and treatment for the flu, to save customers time and money and to eliminate unnecessary doctor visits.

Newsome and Bentley said they are grateful for the love and support they have received from the community and their families.

Bentley said it’s great to know that they can have an impact on the lives of those who have molded him and helped him get to where he is now, adding that many of PPD’s customers are former educators and coaches.

“It’s neat to be able to take care of the people who took care of us,” said Bentley.
