Southeast Kentucky Chamber One Of Six Local Chambers In Kentucky To Host National Civics Bee

PIKEVILLE, KY (November 10, 2023) – The Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is proud to be one of six chambers of commerce in Kentucky to host the local level of the National Civics Bee in the spring of 2024. The Southeast Kentucky Chamber will host the Eastern Kentucky Region, which is made up of 24 counties, and hold the regional competition in April. Participation in the National Civics Bee is open to all sixth, seventh and eighth grade students.
 
The National Civics Bee includes competition at three levels: regional, state, and national. For Phase One of the competition students must submit an essay on a civics issue of their choice to enter the competition. The essay submission portal opens November 13, 2023 and closes January 8, 2024.
 
A panel of judges will select 20 students based on their essays to participate in the next phase. Phase Two is a quiz event testing civics knowledge in front of a panel of judges and live audience at the Mountain Arts Center in April 2024. In Phase Three, the three winners of each regional competition advance to the state level of the National Civics Bee. Phase Four concludes the competition with state winners advancing to Washington D.C. to compete at the national level.
 
The first-place winner of the regional level will receive a $500 cash prize. The finalists at the state level can receive a $1,000 cash prize and be able to compete at the national level in Washington D.C. for a chance to win over $50,000 in prizes.
 
Eastern Kentucky is home to several state finalists of the 2022 and 2023 National Civics Bees. The 2023 Kentucky State winner is from Pikeville, KY, and throughout the competition he took home $1,250 in cash prizes as a 6th grader.
 
The Eastern Kentucky Region includes Bath, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Floyd, Greenup, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Letcher, Lewis, Magoffin, Martin, Mason, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Perry, Pike, Powell, Rowan, and Wolfe counties.

The National Civics Bee is an annual initiative aimed at encouraging young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Organized in partnership with The Civic Trust of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition is open to middle school students in Eastern Kentucky. The intention is to inspire them to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions.
